Transfer status guide

Track your number transfer.

Moving a number takes a few steps between carriers. Here is what each status means and how long it takes.

Kai tracking a number transfer progress

1 to 3 weeks

Standard window

Landlines and business numbers take 7 to 21 days on average.

Confirmed date

The real date

Your requested date is a wish. The carrier confirms the true day.

Zero gap

Call coverage

Calls ring your old carrier until the moment the switch flips.

The steps

What each status in KaiCalls means.

Check your status anytime on your Number Porting dashboard page.

1. Draft or Requested

You entered your number and details. Our carrier team reviews the form before sending it to your old carrier.

2. Submitted to carrier

The port request has been sent to your old provider. They have a few business days to verify the bill and approve.

3. Date confirmed (FOC)

Your old carrier accepted the request. They set a firm date and time for the switch. We call this the cutover date.

4. Switch completed

The carrier moved the route to KaiCalls. You run test calls to verify Kai answers. Once tested, you accept the move.

Important difference

Requested date vs. carrier-confirmed date.

Understanding this prevents surprises on switch day.

  1. 1

Your requested date is a preference

When you fill out the form, you pick a preferred date. We ask your old carrier for that day, but they have final say.
  2. 2

The confirmed date is legally binding

Once the old carrier approves, they send a Firm Order Commitment (FOC). That confirmed date is when calls actually move.
  3. 3

Plan your staffing around the confirmed date

Do not announce a switch or close accounts until you see the confirmed date in your KaiCalls dashboard.

Avoiding delays

What can hold up a transfer.

Information mismatch

If the address on the request does not match the old carrier bill, they reject it. You must update and resubmit.

Wrong transfer PIN

Wireless and VoIP carriers need a dedicated port-out PIN. A regular voicemail PIN will cause an instant rejection.

Overdue balance or freeze

If the old account is past due or has a carrier port freeze turned on, the carrier will hold the line until cleared.

Toll-free numbers

Toll-free numbers (800, 888, 877) go through a national registry. They often take an extra week to clear.

Cutover day

What to do when switch day arrives.

  • Check your KaiCalls dashboard to verify the status shows Complete.
  • Place a test call to your number from a cell phone.
  • Verify that Kai picks up and greets you by business name.
  • Make an outbound call from KaiCalls to verify caller ID.
  • Once verified, you may safely close your old carrier phone line.
