Porting preparation

What you need to move a number.

Carriers check every letter and digit on your transfer request. Getting your bill and PIN ready first prevents delays.

Kai checking the required porting documents

Carrier bill

Must be recent

A phone bill from the last 30 days shows your exact account details.

Transfer PIN

Required by law

Get this port PIN from your current carrier before you submit.

Zero downtime

When planned

Keep your old service active until the transfer date arrives.

Checklist

The five things to collect first.

Have these in hand before you click Port a Number.

1. Recent phone bill

Download your latest monthly PDF bill or Customer Service Record. The name and address must match what the carrier has on file.

2. Carrier account number

This is on your bill. Some carriers use an account number that is different from your phone number.

3. Number transfer PIN

Most carriers require a temporary 4-to-8 digit port-out PIN. You generate this in your carrier portal or by calling them.

4. Authorized signer name

The person whose name is on the carrier account must sign the transfer form.

Match the records

Why exact matching matters.

Carriers reject requests if an address or name does not match their computer system.

  1. 1

    Legal business name

Use the company name or person name printed on the phone bill, not a brand nickname.
  2. 2

    Physical service address

Use the physical address where the phone line was installed. This is sometimes different from your billing address.
  3. 3

    Billing phone number (BTN)

If you have multiple lines, one line is the main billing number. Your bill lists this number.

Other services

Check what else runs on this number.

Moving your number will disconnect anything else tied to it on the old carrier.

Internet or DSL

If your internet or fiber is bundled on this phone bill, moving the phone number might cancel your internet. Ask your carrier for a dry-loop internet line first.

Alarm systems

Security alarms, fire alarms, or elevator phones that dial out over copper lines cannot use a cloud AI line. Keep them on a dedicated copper line.

Fax machines

Physical desktop fax machines do not work directly on cloud lines. Use digital fax or keep a separate line.

Google Business Profile

Keep your business listings in mind. Since you are moving the same number, your public listings stay accurate.

Verification

Ready to submit? Check these off.

  • I have a copy of my current phone bill from the last 30 days.
  • I have my carrier account number and port-out PIN.
  • The authorized person on the phone bill is ready to approve.
  • My current carrier account is paid and active with no overdue balance.
  • No building alarms or internet bundles will be cut off by moving this line.

Warning

Do not cancel your old service yet.

Never call your carrier to cancel service before the transfer is finished. If you cancel first, the carrier shuts off the number, and you can lose it forever. The transfer itself will automatically close the old phone line once KaiCalls takes it over.
