Text keywords

When a customer texts STOP, Kai stops. Here is exactly how that works.

Carriers require every business texter to honor STOP, START, and HELP. Kai handles all three on every number. You never have to watch for them.

Kai listening for a customer reply

STOP

Opt out

Kai marks the number opted out and sends one goodbye text.

START

Opt back in

Only the customer can turn texts back on, by texting START.

HELP

Get help

Kai replies with a short note on how to stop.

Overview

Why keywords matter

Every registered texting campaign promises the carriers three things. Kai keeps all three for you.

When a business registers to send texts, it promises the carriers that people can leave any time. The way people leave is a keyword. They text STOP. The business must stop right away.

A business that keeps texting after STOP can lose its registration. Then none of its texts deliver. Kai handles the keywords the second they arrive, so that never happens to you.

Keywords

Which words count

Kai reads the whole reply. If the reply is one of these words alone, he acts on it.

  • Opt out: STOP, STOPALL, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END, QUIT
  • Opt in: START, YES, SUBSCRIBE, UNSTOP, OPTIN
  • Help: HELP, INFO, SUPPORT, ASSIST

Case does not matter. “stop” and “STOP” work the same. Kai also understands plain requests like “take me off your list.” He treats those as STOP too.

Behavior

What Kai does with each one

STOP

Kai marks that number as opted out for texts from your business. He sends one short reply: “You have been unsubscribed from messages. Reply START to resubscribe.” Then he sends nothing else to that number.

The opt-out is saved before the reply goes out. If saving fails, Kai does not send the reply. He would rather try again than tell someone they are off the list when they are not.

START

Kai marks the number as opted back in. Texts to that person can flow again. Only the customer can do this. You cannot turn a STOP back on from the dashboard.

HELP

Kai replies with a short note that says how to stop. He does not change the person's status.

A STOP blocks texts, not calls. If a customer also asks you to stop calling, add them to your Do Not Call list. Kai can also do that when a caller asks him by phone.

Step by step

Test it yourself

A two-minute test from your own cell shows you the whole loop.

  1. 1

    Get a text from Kai

Call your KaiCalls number from your cell and hang up before Kai answers. A missed-call text should arrive.
  2. 2

    Reply STOP

Text the word STOP back. You should get the goodbye text within a few seconds.
  3. 3

    Check the dashboard

Go to Dashboard > Compliance > Consent. Your cell number now shows as Opted Out.
  4. 4

    Reply START

Text START to turn texts back on for your own cell.
  • The goodbye text arrived after STOP.
  • Your number shows as Opted Out on the Consent tab.
  • Kai did not send you any other text after STOP.
  • After START, a new missed call sends a text again.

Fix it

Common problems

A customer replied STOP but says they got another text.

Open Dashboard > Messages and find the thread. Check the time on the STOP and the time on the next text. A text already in flight can land a moment later. Nothing new is sent after the STOP.

A customer wants texts again but I cannot turn them on.

That is on purpose. Ask the customer to text START to your number. Kai turns texts back on when he sees it.

Someone wrote "please stop" in a longer text.

Kai reads plain requests to stop and treats them as STOP. Check the Consent tab to confirm the opt-out saved.

HELP replied with a generic note.

That is the current help text on every number. It is short so it always fits one text. Your business name and hours come from the rest of the thread.

Honest limits

What this does not cover

You cannot change the keyword list or the reply text per business today. The lists above are the same for every KaiCalls number.

A STOP applies to texts from your business. It does not stop texts from other businesses that use KaiCalls. It does not block that person from texting or calling you.
